- Trailer must be hooked correctly and properly – check exactly how to hook and unhook before you leave the trailer premises, especially when it has got a release pin on the coupler.
- Put the safety chain in place over tow-hitch.
- Make sure the all the lights are working when the trailer is hooked. Lights should be working as this is checked before hired out.
- Tyres pressure is set to 2 bars
- Make sure that you are satisfied with the condition of the trailer, because you are responsible for it after you have hooked it.
- See that there is a spare tyre.
- Load trailer evenly over axle with 60% of load towards the front of trailer. Never have the trailer heavier at the back than the front. It will swift downhill and jack-knive.
- Do not overload trailer. Consult the data plate and/or the owner of the trailer,
- Do not speed. According law, any vehicle that tow, may not exceed 80km/h. However, for long distances with not a big load, you can drive quite safe if you do not exceed 100km p/h.
- Increase your following distance to the vehicle in front of you. Keep a minimum of a 4 second gap between you and the vehicle in front. In poor weather conditions, increase this gap to 6 seconds.
- Anticipate stops and brake early.
